Budapest to Split by Night Train: The ADRIA Experience

Every summer, direct night trains depart from Budapest to the Croatian coast, specifically to the destination of Split. This year, the train will consist of 7 air-conditioned sleeper and couchette cars, along with a dining car. With a departure time of 6:45 PM from Budapest and an arrival time of 9:45 AM in Split, you'll spend most of your journey sleeping, allowing you to arrive refreshed and ready to hit the beach. If you choose to spend your journey in the dining car, the panoramic view will enhance your experience, complemented by the picturesque landscape around Lake Balaton.

Services on Board

As mentioned above, the train consists of a total of seven cars, four couchettes, two sleepers and one dining car. Couchette cars are standardly offered in four- and six-berth variants, sleeping cars in the variant of three, two and one private bed.

Couchette Cars

Ideal and affordable travel for families, groups of friends, or individuals. They are offered as mixed compartments for men and women. In the event that ladies want to take advantage of the price advantages of a couchette compartment, but are not interested in sharing a compartment with strangers, it is possible to use a limited number of compartments that are reserved only for them.

The price for a couchette in a 6-bed compartment is from 49 EUR for an adult, in a 4-bed compartment from 59 EUR. Want to reserve an entire four or six-seater compartment for yourself? Prices start from €209.

Sleeper Cars

This option is suitable mainly for families of three, couples or individual travelers who prefer private travel. The compartments are offered as triple, double or single. In sleeping cars, the division into male and female passengers is strictly observed for people traveling alone.

All sleeping compartments are equipped with a washbasin and a shower is also available for everyone from the car. If you are interested, there are compartments that are connected by connecting doors, which can be used for larger families, couples traveling or as an apartment.

All carriages are equipped with complete bed linen, including blankets and pillows, a welcome pack in the form of an evening snack and a breakfast menu in the morning.

The price for a bed in a 3-bed compartment is from 64 EUR, in a double from 79 EUR and in a single from 119 EUR.

Dining Car

The ideal place for those who can't sleep or for those of you who want to enjoy the journey to the fullest or make new friends. The car is in operation throughout the train journey. There is a wide range of hot and cold dishes and drinks on offer.

The menu of the dining car is very varied. For breakfast you can have fried or scrambled eggs, a cold plate, sausages, croissants or vegetable pâté with bread. For dinner you can choose from soups, salads, hamburgers, fish, spaghetti, … The offer is really big. Desserts, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are a matter of course.   • The train runs from June 9 to September 30 from Budapest every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, from Split every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, thus complementing the offer of the night train of the Slovak Railways on this route.
  • Passengers in sleeping cars have access to the Business Lounge at Budapest-Keleti station before and after the train's departure.
  • HUF, EUR and credit cards are accepted on the train.
  • Animals and bicycles are not allowed on the train!
  • Tickets can be purchased at international ticket offices of MÁV-START, GySEV and partner railways and on the website jegy.mav.hu, even without registration. Online tickets can be printed or presented in the MÁV application.
  • Tickets purchased in the MÁV-START online sales system must be paid in HUF after conversion at a fixed rate. (1 € = 380 HUF – may differ from the exchange rate of the bank that issued your card!) The same exchange rate applies in Hungarian ticket offices, where € is also accepted.
